What the research says...
When implented correctly, formative assessments are effective and successful . Roskos, K. and Neuman, S.B. (2012) suggest five key items to do this. First, provide basic, clear goals. Second, include key concept and skills. Third, include rubrics that determine all criteria for easier assessment. Fourth, plan ahead. Fifth, let students know what activities are used for formative assessment in the classroom. As written “Formative assessment needs to occur in a culture that cultivates a learning orientation.”
Formative Assessment at HomeIn the article, 8 Quick Checks for Understanding, author and educator, Jay Mc Tighe, focuses on how to successfully implement formative assessment in a remote classroom setting. These can easily be used at home, as well.

Book Choice"Numerous studies report that students' intrinsic motivation increases when teachers support student choice in literacy tasks (Guthrie et al., 2007; McCombs , 2003; Turner, 1995). When students are supported in choosing what they read, there are indications that they engage in reading more often...and are likely to continue reading" (Gambrell and Morrow 2019).
